Back in 2012 Intel launched there first NUC (next unit of computing), which was based on an Ivy Bridge platform. Meanwhile it looks like the second generation of NUC's is announcing itself, with a picture of a system sneaking into the web.
In case you missed it, Intels NUC is a highly compact system, which is based on a fully fledged Intel CPU. Overall it offers quite a lot of performance and these NUC's are for example perfect for office environments and paired up with a decent SSD working on these tiny machines is actually really decent.
When we're talking about the second generation of NUC's, then we're apparently waiting for the first Haswell based system to surface. At PAX Prime one of these little but powerful setups has been exposed and it features an Intel Core i5-4250U CPU, which clocks at 1.3 GHz standard and 2.6 GHz Turbo. Other than that, this CPU offers 3 MB L3 cache, HD 5000 graphics and a TDP, which is as low as 15 Watt.
Next to the CPU, the enclosure is also a critical part of a NUC. Since the system measures only a mere 116.6 mm x 112 mm x 34.5 mm, heat can definitely be an issue if it isn't removed apropriately. If you look at the connectivity side of the NUC you find a single 3.5mm headset jack, four USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI, a mini-DisplayPort and wireless connectivity via 802.11 b/g/n or Bluetooth 4.0.
