Intel introduces new Thunderbolt controllers

Previews 20Gbps Falcon Ridge

During the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show held this week in Las Vegas, Intel has introduced two new Thunderbolt controllers that will bring Displayport 1.2 capability and some new features, the Intel DSL4510/4410. In addition to the new controllers, Intel previewed an early prototype silicon of its next-generation Thunderbolt controller, codename Falcon Ridge that will bring even more improvements including transfer speeds of up to 20Gbps.

The DSL4510/4410 Thunderbolt controllers will bring DisplayPort 1.2 capability when connected to native DP display, will improve power management and also reduce platform bill-of-materials (BOM) cost. In addition to these two new controllers, Intel also previewed and early prototype of its next-genaration Thunderbolt controller, codename Falcon Ridge, that will bring an increase in performance to 20Gbps and also enable 4K video file transfer and simultaneous display.

The Falcon Ridge controller initial production is expected before the end of this year. Thunderbolt adoption has been quite slow and currently, Apple is the only platform with Thunderbolt and Apple is apparently the only company that is serious about it.

Intel also plans to upgrade Thunderbolt to 50Gbps of performance by 2015.
