Already with the ROG STRIX GeForce GTX 1080 Ti, ASUS re-introduced a graphics card cooler, that requires more than two slots. Before that it’s been quite a long time that we’ve last seen graphics cards coolers from ASUS requiring more than two slots. In fact we’d have to go back in time to when the Radeon 7970 or the GeForce GTX 580 were new.
Large coolers do apparently have the advantage that they offer increased cooling capacity compared to smaller models, but self-evidently they also require more space. Most cases that are on the market today are designed to work with any single dual-slot card out there but not necessarily with all the 2.5-slot cards. Especially in the case of mini-ITX cases it’s recommendable to check the specifications as to whether a 2.5-slot card fits or not.
Nevertheless, since the Radeon Vega RX 56 is a 210 Watt TDP card this huge cooler will bring the benefit of cooling this pixel accelerator at a very low noise level. It’s actually quite likely that the cooler will be capable of keeping the card at reasonable temperatures without having to rev the fans up and whenever it needs to it can be expected that the fans won’t have to spin at high speeds.
So far we’re looking forward to seeing the first reviews on these cards appear, which will tell more about whether a 2.5-slot cooler is really necessary in combination with AMD’s Radeon RX Vega 56 chip.
