AMD Radeon RX 500 launches in April

Rebrand of RX 400 series

According to information from Heise.de, AMD is planning to release it's RX 500 series in April. The launch will be split in two parts. In a first wave the the high-end cards will be launched an at a second stage the mid-range cards will make it to market. Overall it’s a bit a pity that it look like all cards, except the Radeon RX 550, are going to be rebrands from the Radeon RX 400 series.

To be a bit more precise on the launch dates, Heise.de is mentioning that the Radeon RX 580 and the Radeon RX 570 will be available for sale as of April 4th, while the Radeon RX 560 and Radeon RX 550 series will hit the shelves on April 11th.

Unfortunately this launch has nothing to do with the upcoming AMD Radeon RX Vega high-end parts. These cards are slated to launch in May this year. Apart from that, frankly speaking, it’s quite disappointing to see AMD come up with another rebrand of old cards. It appears that the only differences between the Radeon RX 580 and the Radeon RX 570 compared to their predecessors RX 480 and RX 470 are going to be the clock speeds.

Back in the days when the Radeon R9 390X, 390, … and so on were launched AMD pulled the same trick. Already back then customers didn’t like this strategy since their feeling fooled.

The only card that seems to be based on a different chip is the Radeon RX 550, which is supposed to be based on the Polaris 12 silicon. So far there is no information available on this card and we’re yet to wait for details to appear.

Apparently we’re all waiting for Vega, but the fact that AMD is rebranding old cards is really not a good one. It certainly lets us assume that Vega will most likely only be present in the high-end segment and AMD won’t derive an entire lineup from this architecture.
