With Skylake-X Intel is going to bring new high-end processors to the market. Apart from that there will also be a new chipset. According to new rumors the chip giant might come up with a 12 core / 24 thread flagship model.
Since it looks like AMD is capable of competing with Intel again in the market for desktop processors it could be possible that the upcoming Skylake-X portfolio will feature a chip with 12 cores and 24 threads, at least if we’re to believe latest rumors.
Apparently this has to be taken with a grain of salt but yet there is a possibility that chips like this could make it into the high-end desktop segment. So far it appears confirmed that during Gamescom 2017 Intel is going to launch a 10 core, an 8 core, a 6 core and a 4 core Skylake-X processor, with the quad-core part being based on Kaby lake architecture. Since the underlying architectures of Intel’s HEDT processors is highly scalable and derived from the massive multi-core Xeon server processors it would certainly be possible for Intel to come up with a 12C/24T chip. Nevertheless implementing such a design for socket LGA 2066 would require some time.
On the other hand also AMD’s Ryzen architecture is highly scalable, which gives them the possibility to work on processors with a higher core-count as well. Apart from that AMD also has large multicore chips ready as well with their Naples parts and scaling one of those down to 12 or 16 cores sounds perfectly possible.
So far it looks like 2017 becoming more interesting on a daily basis. It’s absolutely great to see that AMD in a competitive state again with a microarchitecture that can compete with Intel’s.
