Samsung starts mass production of 10nm FinFET SoC

Up to 27 higher performance

Samsung has announced that it has started the mass production of SoC on 10nm FinFET manufacturing process, promising impressive improvements in both performance and power consumption.

According to Samsung, the mass production of System-ion-Chip (SoC) products on 10nm FinFET manufacturing process is a next step in production after the successful mass production of the industry's first FinFET mobile application processor (AP) in January, 2015.

Samsung says that the new 10 nm FinFET process (10LPE) adopts an advanced 3D transistor structure with additional enhancements in both process technology and design enablement compared to its 14 nm manufacturing process, leading up to 30 percent increase in area efficiency with 27 percent higher performance or 40 percent lower power consumption.

Samsung was also keen to note that its second-generation 10nm process (10LPP) with performance boost is on track for mass production in the second half of next year.

Samsung's SoCs based on 10nm manufacturing process will be used in digital devices launching early next year and are expected to become more widely available throughout 2017.
