AMD announces new A10-7890K flagship APU

New FM2+ and AM3+ motherboards incoming

AMD has updated its desktop APU lineup with the introduction of the new flagship AMD A10-7890K FM2+ Kaveri Refresh APU as well as announced a new refresh of AM3+ and FM2+ motherboards which will feature USB 3.1 ports and M.2 SATA slots.

Based on a Kaveri refresh design, the new A10-7890K APU features two Steamroller modules (four cores), 4MB L2 cache, dual-channel DDR3-2133 memory controller and Radeon R7 GPU with 512 Stream Processors. While these specifications are pretty much the same as on the earlier available A10-7870K APU, the new A10-7890K is currently the fastest FM2+ APU money can buy, working at 4.0GHz base and 4.3GHz maximum Turbo clocks.

The new A10-7890K still retains the same 95W TDP although the correct GPU clock are not known.

Unfortuantely, AMD did not reveal if it plans to bundle the new A10-7890K with its recently unveiled Wraith reference CPU cooler, but did demo it during CES 2016 show with that same CPU cooler.

In addition to the new flagship Kaveri-based A10-7890K APU, AMD has also announced that it is working with motherboard manufactures on new socket AM3+ and FM2+ motherboards that will include both USB 3.1 Type-A and Type-C ports as well as M.2 SATA slots.

AMD is expected to refresh its APU lineup with the upcoming Bristol Ridge APUs, which, unfortunately, will still be based on a 28nm manufacturing process and Excavator CPU architecture while Zen-based APUs should come later, with AMD Raven Ridge APUs.
