Samsung has announced that it has started the mass production of new 12Gb LPDDR4 DRAM on 20nm manufacturing process, which in the end will bring 6GB or RAM to mobile devices.
The new 12Gb LPDDR4 DRAM chips offer 50 percent greater density compared to currently available 8Gb chips. What is more important is that 12Gb chips now allow manufacturers to bring 6GB of RAM to smartphones and tablets since you can achieve it by placing four 12Gb chips in a single package or two 12Gb chips for 3GB of RAM. A 6GB RAM package with four 12Gb chips will actually take the same amount of space as current 3GB packages with 6Gb chips.
The new 12Gb LPDDR4 DRAM chips are also more than 30 percent faster than currently available 8Gb chips. Featuring a speed of 4266Mbps or 34Gbps over a 64-bit memory interface.
With Samsung starting a mass production of these new memory chips it is just a matter of time before we see mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, move from standard 2GB to 3GB and/or from 4GB to 6GB.
