Skylake CPU gets de-lided by Splave

Gets 18°C lower temperatures under load

It was just a matter of time before one of the extreme overclockers try to de-lid the Skylake in order to remove its IHS in order to get lower temperature, especially under LN2.

While we already seen plenty of records broken with the new Intel 6th generation Core Skylake CPUs, a well known overclocker, Splave, has decided to remove the IHS on the Skylake CPU.

According to Splave, the de-lidding process is quite easy and brings decent temperature improvements, especially under LN2 overclocking.

Splave notes that before de-lidding, his Skylake sample hit 96°C and failed while after it the core was 78°C and passed all the tests, which is an 18°C improvement. Under LN2, the CPU managed to hit temperatures of -145°C with 20°C under load, which is much better compared to when the CPU had its IHS on it.

Splave also recommends that razor blade is used to de-lid the CPU as the PCB is quite thin and can be cracked with any other process.
