Intel CEO promises 14nm Broadwell before Christmas

Next-gen 14nm Broadwell incoming

Although Intel has been talking about the launch of next-gen 14nm Broadwell parts in late 2014 for quite some time, Intel's CEO, Brian Krzanich has now promised that Broadwell will be available during 2014 holiday shopping season.

During Intel's last financial call, Krzanich did not reveal any specific dates regarding the launch of the Broadwell, other than already known information that 14nm transition had its share of problems and actually required a lot more funds than any earlier transition.

During the Maker Faire in San Mateo, California, which was held during the weekend, Intel's CEO confirmed and promised that Broadwell will be ready for the holidays. This usually means that Intel will ship Broadwell to OEMs in time for them to integrate them into their holiday product lineup and get them to retail shelves.

This also means that the new 14nm Broadwell will miss the second "back-to-school" season but even during the last financial call, Krzanich noted that it might not be possible to get the product ready and on shelves.

The Broadwell CPU is based on a die shrink of Intel's current Haswell architecture and first CPU built on 14nm manufacturing process, which should bring much better performance and most importantly, much better power efficiency.
