VESA adds Adaptive-Sync to DisplayPort standard

Makes the G-Sync obsolete

The Video Electronics Standards Association, also known as the VESA, has announce the addition of Adaptive-Sync to the DisplayPort 1.2a video interface standard which should provide smoother, tear-free images for gaming and judder-free video playback as well as reduce power consumption of static desktop content and low frame rate video, according to VESA.

The added Adaptive-Sync for the DisplayPort 1.2a specification actually makes the Nvidia G-Sync obsolete even before it made a significant impact on the market and puts AMD in a rather better position and actually does something similar to AMD's FreeSync which was demoed during CES.

"DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync enables a new approach in display refresh technology," said Syed Athar Hussain, Display Domain Architect, AMD and VESA Board Vice Chairman. "Instead of updating a monitor at a constant rate, Adaptive-Sync enables technologies that match the display update rate to the user's content, enabling power efficient transport over the display link and a fluid, low-latency visual experience."

According to VESA, Adaptive-Sync allows the source to optimize transport of the video format leveraging OS and DisplayPort interface during playback of lower frame rate video contents and also allows it to reduce the power demand thus extending battery life.

While we are still far away from having actual products with Adaptive-Sync on the store shelves this practically puts a nail in the Nvidia G-Sync coffin and puts more focus on AMD's FreeSync, which is, according to AMD, "a unique AMD hardware/software solution that utilizes DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync protocols to enable user-facing benefits: smooth, tearing-free and low-latency gameplay and video."
