MWC 2014: Sony unveils the Xperia Z2 flagship

5.2-incher with Snapdragon 801 chipset

Sony is definitely one of the rare smartphone manufacturer to show its flagship smartphone at MWC 2014, but nevertheless, the Xperia Z2 definitely draws a lot of attention with its 5.2-inch 1920x1080 Triluminos screen, 4K video capture capability and new Snapdragon 801 chipset.

The new Xperia Z2 smartphone looks a lot like the last year Xperia Z1 flagship and, as noted, is based around a 5.2-inch 1920x1080 Triluminos IPS panel screen with same Bravia technology used in Sony's TVs. On the back of it is the 20.7-megapixel camera which was updated to shoot 4K video at 30fps and bring a couple of new effects. It packs the same 1/2.3" sensor placed behind the 27mm G Lens with f/2.0 aperture.

The heart of the new Xperia Z2 is the Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 801 chipset with four Krait 400 CPU cores clocked at 2.3GHz and Adreno 330 GPU. The chipset is paired up with 3GB of memory. In case you missed it earlier, the Snapdragon 801 SoC brings up to 45-percent improvement in camera sensor processing speed while rest of the details, including pin-to-pin compatibility, should be the same as on the Snapdragon 800.

Sony also decided to threw in new stereo speakers to the Xperia Z2 with so called S-Force Front Surround as well as digital noise-canceling technology with Sony's MDR NC31EM noise canceling headset. As expected, the new flagship is also I58 certified which means it will work under water.

Despite the beefed up specs, the new Xperia Z2 flagship is actually narrower and thinner at 146.8x73.3x8.2mm, which makes it thinner and narrower than the predecessor. Despite the larger 3200mAh battery, the weight also went down to 158g.

According to Sony, the new Xperia Z2 flagship will be available for €600 in March and should hit retail in White, Black and Purple color options.
