Although it has been scheduled for launch in January 2014, Sweclockers site managed to get their hands on all the details regarding the ASUS' upcoming R9 290X DirectCU II OC graphics card that will feature custom PCB, ASUS' DirectCU II dual-fan cooler and a decent factory-overclock.
It appears that the R9 290X has pretty much room for overclock when paired up with a custom PCB and decent cooler as ASUS' managed to push it up to 1050MHz for the GPU on the upcoming ASUS' R9 290X DirectCU II OC while 4GB of GDDR5 memory was also overclocked from reference 1250MHz (5.0GHz effective), up to 1350MHz (5.4GHz effective).
According to details from Sweclockers, the custom PCB features an 8-phase DIGI+ VRM with ASUS Super Alloy Power technology. It also packs SAP CAPs that should provide additional overclocking headroom as well as concrete alloy chokes that should eliminate buzzing noise noticed on some reference R9 290X graphics card. The 8-phase VRM is powered by 8+6-pin PCI-Express connectors and it also features voltage read points as well.
ASUS started a new trend with its Geforce GTX 780 Ti DirectCU II graphics card and it appears that the R9 290X DirectCU II OC will also ship with both red and gold metallic stickers in order to match the graphics card to your favorite motherboard.
As announced earlier, the new ASUS R9 290X DirectCU II OC should be ready in mid-January with a retail/e-tail price of around US $629.
