Amazon has unveiled two new Kindle Fire HDX tablets that will feature some quite impressive specifications as well as a price that will certainly put a lot of pressure on competition in already crowded tablet market.
The Kindle Fire HDX 7 features a 7-inch 1920x1200 screen that adds up to 332ppi density. The precise dimensions are set at 186x128x9mm and weighs up to 311g, which is certainly not bad for a 7-inch tablet. It is equipped with Qualcomm's top-of-the-line quad-core Snapdragon 800 SoC with Adreno 330 GPU clocked at 2.2GHz for the CPU and up to 450MHz for the GPU part. The chipset features 2GB of RAM and a decent front-facing HD camera. The rest of the features and specs include optional 4G, dual band MIMO WiFi, dual stereo speakers and enough battery to keep it running for around 11 hours of mixed use or 17 hours as an e-reader.
The new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9-inch is quite a different beast and although it is based on the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset with same clocks, it features much better 2560x1600 8.9-inch screen that adds up to 339ppi of density. In addition to the front-facing HD camera, the 8.9-incher also comes with an 8-megapixel rear-one as well. Dimensions of the Fire HDX 8.9-inch are set at 231x158x7.8mm and it weighs up to 384g. The rest of the specs are pretty much the same but it has slightly higher 12 hour mixed use and 18 hour e-reader use battery life.
Both tablets run on Amazon's new Fire OS 3.0 (codename Mojito) based on some version of the Android Jelly Bean. Unfortunately, it still has no access to Google's Play Store. Both new tablets will be available in 16, 32 or 64GB versions and with an optional 4G. The price of the Kindle Fire HDX 7-inch starts at US $229 and should start shipping on October 18th while the 8.9-inch one starts at US $379 and should be ready by November 7th.
