Gigabyte announces support for new Xeon CPUs

E5-1600 V2 and 2600 V2 supported on Gigabyte MBs

Gigabyte has announced that it will, in coordination with Intel's official launch, feature full support for the new Intel Xeon processors E5-1600 V2 and 2600 V2 product families across its entire line of server and workstation motherboards, racks and high performance computing modules based on the LGA 2011 socket.

To be ready for the new Intel Xeon processors E5-1600 V2 and 2600 V2 by a simple BIOS update, the benefits of the 22nm tri-gate process technology will include higher frequencies, higher core counts (up to 12 cores / 24 threads) and larger last-level caches, but especially a much more varied mix of core/frequencies thanks to the introduction of the new dual-socket workstation segment. Thanks to 22nm die shrink, you can achieve up to 30 percent average decrease in idle power consumption, something that is quite important in the workstation and server segment of the market.

The new CPUs also bring the 1866MHz memory support which was previously limited to 1600MHz as well as the Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller (APIC) technology, Intel Protection Technology with OS Guard, and Intel Data Protection Technology with Secure Key for security.

Thanks to engineering, PCB layout and BIOS fine-tuning, Gigabyte's motherboards might be one of the rare on the market to offer support for 1866MHz with higher DIMM population (8 DIMMs per socket).
