Already last year we've heard, that NVIDIA is working on a new GK208 graphics chip, which should be the heart of upcoming graphics cards. Back in the days it was unclear wether this GPU will power high-end or low-end cards and it looks like this mystery has now been solved.
According to a report from 4Gamer.net, the GK208 is a low-end graphics chip. As the first manufacturer of them all Zotac jumps the gun and shows a GT 640 as well as a GT 630 graphics card. One interesting thing is, that the card supports CUDA 3.5. A closer look at the GT 640 reveals that it features 384 CUDA cores, 32 TMU's and 8 ROP's. The GPU clocks at 1'046 MHz and the 2 Gigabyte GDDR5 memory, which are connected to the GPU via a 64 bit memory interface clock at 5'000 MHz. Concerning the TDP the card draws a mere 49 Watt.
Spec wise the GT 630 is a slightly scaled down version of the GT 640, whereas this card comes with DDR3 instead of GDDR5 memory. In case of the GPU there is a GK208-301 piece of silicon and the card boasts 384 CUDA cores, 32 TMU's and 8 ROP's. The DDR3 memory does its job at 1800 MHz and there is a 64 bit wide memory interface.
Both cards will be seen in budget PC's and they're expected to hit a retail price, that is substantially lower than 100 US-Dollar.
