Intel has shown their upcoming enterprise Optane SSD with M.2 form factor, planned to be called Optane SSD DC P4801X. At the moment the Optane family includes the flagship Optane SSD DC P4800X, the consumer Optane SSD 900P, and the consumer Optane Memory and Optane SSD 800P M.2 drives.
The Optane P4800X is a power-hungry drive which comes with a big controller that isn't compatible with M.2 2280 cards. With the upcoming Optane SSD DC P4801X, Intel has managed to scale down the packaging of their SSD controller in order to fit on a M.2 SSD. The controller on the P4801X sports the same 7-channel architecture as the P4800X, but peak performance will be lower due to the power and thermal limits of M.2 drives.
So far Intel hasn't done a full product announcement, in other words Intel hasn't released any performance numbers. The Open Compute Project Summit is an event focused entirely on datacenter products. Due to this fact, we expect to see soon a consumer product based on the SSD DC P4801X which can fill the gap between the Optane SSD 800P and the 900P.
