Aqua Computer kryoM.2 cooler for SSDs

Two new cooling blocks

It looks like it’s becoming one of those neverending topics whether it makes sense to actively cool your M.2 SSD or not. Nonetheless, Aqua Computer has decided to offer a cooling block for your precious M.2 SSD to potentially help increasing performance by keeping the drive from throttling.

The kryoM.2 micro has been designed to be compatible with a variety of drives and especially motherboards. Aqua Computer says this heatsink will fit on almost any motherboard which features a M.2 slot. As expected, the cooler only works with 2280 form factor SSDs which means devices, that are 22 millimeters wide and 80 millimeters long. An electrically-isolating sticker covers the back of the storage device and a thermal pad fits below the black anodized aluminum heatsink, which covers the NAND flash memory chips. The heatsink itself is attached to the SSD with stainless steel clips.

If you have a big system with an empty PCIe slot you might be interested in the kryoM.2 EVO. The EVO includes a PCIe riser card to mount the storage device perpendicular to the motherboard. The riser is compatible with large aluminum heatsinks, which can be directly attached to the SSD using screws. The back of the M.2 SSD is cooled by a smaller heatsink. The expansion card features orange LEDs that can be set to on, off, or controlled by drive activity. Overall the kryoM.2 micro is more suitable for single-sided M.2 SSD, while the kryoM.2 EVO might make more sense with double-sided M.2 units.

Aqua Computers' kryoM.2 micro M.2 cooler is available now for 9.90€. The bigger brother, the kryoM.2 EVO will ship in April for 34.90€.
