It appears that Plextor is not far from launching their first NVMe SSDs. In mid August, most likely during Gamescom, Plextor is going to show their new M8PE solid state drives, which should feature some impressive performance numbers.

Plextor is going to launch two different versions of the M8PE. There is going to be a PCI Express variant as well as a M.2 card. Both of them feature a heatsink to address thermal throttling issues we've seen with several other drives using the M.2 form factor. In the case of the M.2 card the heatsink is a small metal cover, which is attached to the controller, DRAM and NAND chips using a thermal pad. It will be interesting to see if such a small heatsink is enough to prevent this drive from throttling entirely.

The guys over at Computerbase already have a sample in their testing lab and it looks like this is a seriously quick drive. According to a quick CrystalDiskMark run on the 512 Gigabyte model the M.2 version of the M8PE pumps out 2397 MB/s sequential read and 1290 MB/s sequential write speed. Calculating the random IOPS from the Computerbase's CrystalDiskMark screenshot the M8PE can up to 134'000 IOPS in random read QD32 and up to 114'000 randomly writing at QD32.

We're definitely curious to find out more about this drive, since it appears to be an interesting offer. Especially the added heatsink makes us really curious and maybe this will be the first NVMe M.2 SSD which no thermal throttling issues. For now there is now information on the price and we will keep you updated on it as soon as there are more details.
