Nvidia to blame for Gears of War performance issues

Nvidia GameWorks strikes again

Nvidia GameWorks has struck again as it appears that it is the culprit behind both performance and visual issues in the new Gears of War: Ultimate Edition game on AMD Radeon graphics cards.

To be honest, the blame is on both Nvidia and Microsoft as it appears that AMD was not informed that Microsoft has sent out review codes to journalists for performance testing earlier this week and while the game looks impressive it had massive issues on AMD's latest flagship graphics cards.

We already wrote that AMD Radeon Fiji-GPU based graphics cards have massive performance and graphics issues with Gears of War: Ultimate Edition game and it appears that Nvidia GameWorks is to blame, or to be precise Nvidia HBAO+ ambient occlusion feature. Apparently, the HBAO+ is not even specifically noted in the graphics settings of the game but rather only described as Ambient Occlusion setting.

Unfortunately, it appears that HBAO+ is just a part of the issue as it will solve some visual corruption issues with the game as, according to a report from Wccftech.com, it appears Nvidia PhysX is also enabled by default, which means that AMD Radeon graphics cards will suffer a decent performance hit from the start. To make things even worse, it appears that you simply can't disable it as the settings part is overwritten automatically when the game is started.

Hopefully, Microsoft will release an update soon which will fix those issues in Gears of War: Ultimate Edition as this way, it appears that AMD is not to blame and you should steer clear of the game if you are running on AMD GPU.
