While we have previously seen some details regarding GDDR5X memory, recent rumors regarding GDDR6 memory has suggested that GDDR5X might have been rebranded. That appears not to be the case as Micron has confirmed that GDDR5X is coming next year.
In a statement for Tweaktown.com, Micron said that the new memory advancements from the company in 2016 will be called GDDR5X and not GDDR6. Micron also added that GDDR5X and GDDR6 are not the same product and that Micron has not announced any plans involving GDDR6.
This does not mean that GDDR6 is not coming anytime soon, but we will probably first see the new GDDR5X memory which promises up to 16Gbps of memory bandwidth. While it might not have the performance of High Bandwidth Memory (HBM1 and HBM2), it will be faster compared to the GDDR5 and offer manufacturers a similar design as the GDDR5 memory, making things a bit more simple.
Earlier details suggested that High Bandwidth Memory will most likely end up on high-end next-generation graphics cards, while low-end and mainstream market will still stick with GDDR5 and eventually GDDR5X memory.
