ASUS' ROG Matrix GTX 980 Ti Platinum detailed

Custom PCB, DirectCU II cooler and high overclock

While ASUS has already announced its Republic of Gamers Matrix GTX 980 Ti Platinum graphics card a few months ago, we now have more details regarding the fully-custom PCB design and all other features that the best GTX 980 Ti from ASUS has to offer.

Being the most high-end custom graphics card in ASUS' Geforce lineup, the ROG Matrix GTX 980 Ti Platinum is based on Nvidia's GM200-310-A1 GPU which packs 2816 CUDA cores, 176 TMUs and 96 ROPs. It also packs 6GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 384-bit memory interface.

Since Nvidia gave a green light for custom designs, ASUS has decided to make an ultimate GTX 980 Ti graphics card and the ROG Matrix GTX 980 Ti Platinum is the cream of the crop. The list of features and specifications start with a custom PCB with 14-phase DIGI+ VRM with Super Alloy II components that include SAP II Capacitors, Chokes, DrMOS and POSCAPs, all included to offer durable and stable functioning as well as higher tolerance to stress and heat, thus offering higher overclocking potential.

The ASUS ROG Matrix GTX 980 Ti Platinum also include some overclocking-friendly features including Memory Defroster and Safe Mode.

While it should offer extreme overclocking potential thanks to its custom PCB, ASUS decided to keep the factory-overclock at 1190MHz for the base and 1291MHz for the GPU Boost clock in Gaming mode. There is also an OC mode, which takes the ROG Matrix GTX 980 Ti Platinum to 1216MHz GPU base and 1317MHz GPU Boost clocks. In both modes, the 6GB of GDDR5 memory works at 7200MHz.

Taking up just a bi over two slots, the DirectCU II cooler on the ROG Matrix GTX 980 Ti platinum is pretty similar to what we saw earlier from ASUS but with a slightly different orange and grey/silver color scheme. It still comes with two fans with Wing-blade Fan technology and uses five heatpipes, one of which is a 10mm heatpipe.

While we have expected a red/black color scheme from a ROG graphics card, ASUS already used that color scheme on the Strix GTX 980 Ti and probably wanted to show that the ROG Matrix GTX 980 Ti Platinum is a premium product in the lineup. It also features a ROG Color-coded load indicator LED logo which switches colors depending on the load.

The cooler itself is, according to ASUS, up to three times quieter and up to 30 percent better when compared to Nvidia's reference cooler.

Performance wise, the ROG Matrix GTX 980 Ti is up to 21.6 percent faster than a reference graphics cards in some games and 18.7 percent faster than a reference GTX 980 Ti in 3DMark 11.

The new premium ASUS ROG Matrix GTX 980 Ti Platinum is expected to be available in November. Unfortunately, ASUS still has to finalize the price.
