So far only SK Hynix is able to manufacture HBM memory and according to several reports, there is a shortage when it comes to these fast memory chips. That shortage should even affect AMD in a way that doesn’t allow them to push their new Fury cards properly into the markets. During IDF Samsung has announce that by 2016 they’ll be manufacturing HBM memory as well, which must sound like a treat for AMD.
In 2016 there will also be NVIDIA using HBM memory on their graphics cards. In fact, as rumours suggest, NVIDIA is going to skip the first generation of HBM memory chips and jump directly to the second generation of HBM. With AMD having secured a deal that is granting them early access to the HBM technology it will be a little bit more difficult for NVIDIA to make sure their supply chain is set up properly. That is actually where such an announcement from Samsung comes in rather handy, since it will make it easier for NVIDIA to get it’s hands on plenty of chips.
It looks like 2016 is going to be an interesting year for the component industry. With new technologies like 3D XPoint it’s quite likely we’ll see some good advancements.
