AMD working on new 28nm Trinidad GPU

Replacement for Curacao GPU

According to recent rumors AMD is apparently preparing a new Trinidad GPU which should replace the Curacao GPUs which are behind the Radeon R9 270 and R9 270X graphics cards.

According to rumors coming from Chinese VR-Zone, AMD is working on a new Trinidad GPU which will still be based on 28nm manufacturing process and should replace the existing Curacao GPUs behind the Radeon R9 270 and the R7 270X graphics cards.

While the source does not talk about a possible new name for the new graphics card, it does note that it should replace the Curacao GPU which packs 1280 Stream Processors, 80 TMUs and 32 ROPs.

Apparently, the new Trinidad GPU will have similar specifications and performance and while the source did not mention any specific details it did note that it will come with 2GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 256-bit memory interface, which is pretty much what we have seen on both the Curacao Pro and the Curacao XT GPUs, or Radeon R9 270 and R9 270X graphics cards.

Nvidia is preparing its new Maxwell based graphics cards and since the upcoming GTX 960 is rumored to launch at US $199, leaves AMD in a tight spot, considering that its R9 270X and R9 270 were launched at US $179 and US $199 and are now selling at US $149 and US $169.99, depending on the AMD AIB partner and retailer.

With this in mind, AMD needs a good contender for NVidia's upcoming "perfect 1080p gaming" GTX 960 graphics card which should launch on 22nd January.

AMD's new Trinidad GPU is scheduled to launch in March, at least according to the source. In any case, it will definitely be an interesting year ahead of us, at least when it comes to GPUs.
