Samsung starts mass production of PCIe 3.0 SM951 SSD

Samsung has announced that it has started mass production of the mini NVM Express SM951 SSD, which means that we could see this high-performance SSD in stores soon.

Based on a four-lane PCIe 3.0 interface, the SM951 was teased during SSD Global Summit and was capable of reaching sequential transfer speeds of up to 2150MB/s for read and up to 1550MB/s for write. When paired up with Gen2 PCIe interface, the performance does drop but is still at mind blowing 1600MB/s and 1350MB/s, respectively.

The PCIe Gen3 connectivity also brought a few more features to the Samsung SM951 including an ultra-low-power mode, the L1.2 state, in which all high-speed circuits are off and power consumption drops to 2mW.

The Samsung SM951 is expected to be available in 128, 256 and 512GB capacities and to big OEMs and system builders but hopefully we will see it in retail/e-tail pretty soon as well.
