AMD to come up with Dynamic Frame Rate Control

A new software feature for Radeon graphics cards

According to a new report, AMD is working on a new software feature for Radeon graphics cards which will be called the Dynamic Frame Rate Control (DFRC) and which is basically a frame-rate limiter that will allow additional power savings.

While we still do not have all the details regarding the Dynamic Frame Rate Control, and although it sounds a lot like V-Sync, which makes the GPU match the frame-rate to a refresh rate of the display, the DFRC will apparently allow the software to change the GPU power state, most likely by dynamically changing GPU clocks to a value that will be capable of rendering the game at desired FPS, which should result in lower power consumption.

According to a post from AMD's Chris Hook posted over at 3DCenter.org, the power savings that Dynamic Frame Rate Control will bring "were mind blowing." According to the same post, the DFRC features should be available in a new version of Catalyst which will be coming soon.

We are definitely looking forward to it as it does sound interesting.
