According to the latest report from Jon Peddie Research (JPR), regarding the GPU market, Nvidia managed to gain some market share in the second quarter while AMD overall shipements dropped by 7 percent.
Nvidia managed to gain some GPU market share and has increased by 12.9 percent while AMD dropped by 7 percent in the second quarter 2014, according to the JPR report. Intel also gained 11.6 percent in the same period. Overall, the PC market grew by 6 percent compared to the last quarter but dropped by 2.6 percent compared to the same quarter last year. The total discrete GPU market (desktop and notebook) shipments were up by 6.6 percent compared to the last quarter but were down by 7.7 percent compared to th last year.
AMD took a biggest hit as its overall PC shipments decreased by 24 percent compared to the last year, while Nvidia dropped by 4 percent. Intel was a clear winner as it managed to increase its overall PC shipments by 19 percent.
AMD's APU shipments were up by 10.5 percent compared to the last quarter and down by 16 percent in notebooks. Its discrete desktop GPU shipments decreased 19 percent while notebook GPU shipments dropped by 10 percent.
Nvidia on the other hand managed to increase its desktop discrete shipments by 24.3 percent compared to the last quarter, most likely due to a huge success of the GM204 based GTX 980 and GTX 970 graphics cards. Its notebook discrete shipments increased by 3.5 percent while it overall PC shipments were up by 12.9 percent.
"Total discrete GPU (desktop and notebook) shipments from the last quarter increased 6.6%, and decreased 7.7% from last year. Sales of discrete GPUs fluctuate due to a variety of factors (timing, memory pricing, etc.), new product introductions, and the influence of integrated graphics. Overall, the trend for discrete GPUs has increased with a CAGR from 2014 to 2017 now of 3%,” the report noted.
While the graphics market has decreased compared to the last year, shipments were up by 7.8 million, which is the biggest increase in quite some time.
