Michael Larabel from Phoronix is one of the responsible for the development of gaming on GNU/Linux systems. Many people thinks that this kind of OS, due to its Open Source nature, are not fit to play videogames, but luckily there's somebody who disagrees. This work is not easy, but Michael is well equipped and he's testing a lot of drivers.
It's been a few months already, since Phoronix released the first tests on Nvidia and AMD graphics cards on GNU/Linux systems, using the official drivers.
This time, Michael wanted to do more, he wanted to use open source drivers. Results are still fluctuating, since using open source drivers (which are called “New”) on a specific card, an HD6870, they were able to get more performances than a GTX 780 Ti on Team Fortess 2.
We already heave a decent amount of games on GNU/Linux, thanks to Valve, Steam and Steam OS. If Nvidia official drivers will work properly, we might end up pretty soon with a lot of graphics card which will be optimized for Linux systems. Of course, if you want to help develop the open source drivers you can join the team!
Have a look at
these test run in back in May when the compared GPUs with official drivers, and tests for
performances and
power consumption both for AMD and
