According to a leaked guideline allegedly coming from AMD, the new 28nm Tonga based Radeon R9 285 will be announced during AMD's press event, scheduled for 23rd of August, which will celebrate 30 years of graphics and gaming, while the graphics card should hit retail/e-tail shelves on September 2nd.
In case you somehow managed to miss it earlier, the Radeon R9 285 is based on AMD's 28nm Tonga GPU and will be quite similar to Tahiti based R9 280 graphics card, although with a much better energy-efficiency. A month later, probably in October, AMD will launch a faster Radeon R9 285X version based on a fully enabled Tonga GPU.
Earlier rumors suggest that the R9 285 will be based on Tonga Pro GPU and should pack 1792 Stream Processors and come with 2GB of GDDR5 memory paired up with a 256-bit memory interface. The GPU clock is set at 918MHz while memory should end up working at 1375MHz (5.5GHz effective). Of course, since many AMD AIB partners will have custom designs, these clocks might vary. Performance wise, the Tonga Pro-based Radeon R9 285 should be faster than Tahiti Pro-based R9 280.
According to the leaked diagrams, the fully enable 28nm Tonga GPU packs 2048 Graphics CoreNext 1.1 Stream Processors, 128 TMUs, 32 ROPs and a 256-bit memory interface which will be paired up with 2 or 4GB of GDDR5 memory.
Unfortunately, AMD will reveal only partial information regarding the Radeon R9 285 during its August 23rd event so we will most likely wait a bit longer for an official confirmation regarding specifications but we are sure that we will also see plenty of leaks once AMD announce the card.
