For one Beta program that ends, there's one that has just began: Steam, the Valve gaming platform, is unstoppable, and it's starting a new service to stream movies, music and TV series.
Valve is not hiding its intentions. The company founded by Gabe Newell wants to create a complete entertainment eco-system for our living rooms. After the release of BigPicture back in 2012, which looked like a mix between a console GUI and a multimedia platform, the project has kept going thanks to Steam OS, Steam Controller and the famous Steam Machines.
Through the official Steam Database Twitter account,
@SteamDB, we know that Steam has a new Beta program, which is bringing new applications with pretty clear names: Films, Music, Videos and TV Series.
A great number of people spend many hours every week playing videogames. In the last few years videogames are getting more and more attention, thanks to smartphones and the games developed for mobile devices. But, for one person that spends hours playing videogames, there are many more that spends great time surfing the web, watching movies or TV shows. Valve wants to offer different services, even outside the gaming market, to lure more users on the Steam platform, and hopefully to spread Steam Machines and Steam OS faster on the market. It looks like a very smart strategy, but only time will tell us if it's going to pay off.
