US $1 billion less for Samsung - Apple effect?

TSMC is the big winner

According to the latest Samsung financial conference call, the company might report a big loss in future mostly due to Apple switching to TSMC for production of its chips.

Although Samsung might not be happy with Apple due to patent-wars, that same Apple was quite an important customer as its A-series chips were manufactured by Samsung. Recent Apple's decision to switch from Samsung to TSMC might cost Samsung a pretty penny.

During the financial conference call, Samsung's head of investor relations, Robert Yi, noted that sales and profitability from System LSI (logic chip business) worsened as demand from main customers continues to decline. While it obviously did not directly mention Apple, the picture is quite clear.

According to an analyst from IBK Securities, Lee Seung-woo, Samsung might be posting a loss of US $851 million which combined with operating profit of around US $197 million adds up to about a US $1 billion loss for Samsung, in theory at least.

We will have to wait for Samsung's next financial report but Apple is certainly a big customer and we are sure that TSMC will get the best of it.
