It appears that HP's understanding of the word fanless is a bit different as its Chromebox, which was previously marketed as fanless, is actually cooled by a small fan.


We already wrote a lot about HP's Chromebox which had rather impressive 126x124x39mm dimensions and is based on either 1.4GHz Celeron 2955U or the 2.1GHz clocked Core i7-4600U CPU, up to 8GB of DDR3L RAM, 16GB M.2 SSD for storage, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11bgn WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 for connectivity, Realtek's ALC283 audio, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs as well as a card reader.

According to new leaked HP disassembly guide for the Chromebox, the HP's understanding of the word fanless is a bit different than our own, or that of the general population as well. It appears that the 17W TDP CPU simply can't be cooled passively in such a small case so the HP's fanless Chromebox ends up with a small and notebook-like fan and heatsink combination.

While this would not be a big deal usually, this time it is since HP's was quite keen to market the HP Chromebox as the fanless system.
