During the past months we have seen a steady decline on the price of DDR4 memory. Especially in the period from May 2015 to June 2016 the decrease was almost constant month over month. Lately, however, the prices have risen again.
If you own a high-end smartphone it’s almost certainly equipped with DDR4 memory. Just to mention a few mobile phone makers using DDR4 in their high-end models, there are for instance Samsung, HTC, Xiaomi and others. Apparently for the foundries this continuously increasing demand means good business and the simple fact, that high-end smartphones nowadays come with DDR4 memory increased the demand for DDR4 chips massively. Nevertheless high demand means shortages and those usually lead to an increase in price. Therefore customers like you and me are not too happy to see this trend, meaning that prices for DDR4 memory in the PC market are on the rise again. Below we posted two images illustrating price development of DDR4-2133 and DDR4-2400 memory.
After Samsung removed their Note 7 from the market we have seen a slight drop price drop. However, a few months later, prices for memory began to rise again. It appears that the reason for this increase is a higher production volume of Samsung’s Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge smartphone, which should cover the Note 7 fiasco.
If you are thinking about buying new DDR4 memory for your system we suggest to do it as soon as possible, since prices are most likely to rise further.
