AMD unveils 7th generation AMD Pro APUs

Bristol Ridge with extended support

AMD has unveiled its newest 7th generation Bristol Ridge Pro APUs aimed to be used targeting the commercial market, which should benefit from added features like security, encryption and virtualization functions.

Based on the same design as the desktop Bristol Ridge APUs, the new AMD 7th generation Bristol Ridge Pro APU series also uses AMD's Excavator CPU architecture paired up with GCN 3.0 (Graphics Core Next 3.0) GPU architecture. Available in 65W TDP and 35W TDP option, aimed at desktop and SFF applications, the new APUs will be using AM4 chipset, with support for DDR4, PCIe 3.0, USB 3.1 Gen2 Type C, M.2 SSD and more.

The AMD 65W TDP AMD Pro APU lineup will be offered in A12-, A10, A8- and A6-series, depending on amount of CPU cores and GPU CUs (Compute Units) as well as the actual clock of both the CPU and the GPU. The flagship AMD A12-9800 PRO will offer a quad-core CPU part, working at 3.8GHz/4.2GHz, 2MB of cache and Radeon R7-class graphics with 8 CUs (512 Stream Processors), clocked at 1108MHz.

The SFF 35W TDP AMD Pro APU lineup is quite similar but will come with much lower clocks, with flagship A12-9800E PRO working at 3.1GHz/3.8GHz with the same GPU clocked at 900MHz.

AMD claims that its new A-series Pro lineup will be quite competitive to Intel Core i5, Core i3, Pentium and Celeron lineups.

AMD also included a set of commercial-grade quality features, including 18 months of image stability, 24-month of product longevity commitment and up to 36-months of extended OEM warranty, things which are very important in the commercial world.

AMD also included the ARM TrustZone with ARM Cortex-A5 SoC in its new 7th generation Pro APUs, which will bring support for hardware-based security, including Secure Boot, Content Protection, Application security, fTPM 2.0, support for Microsoft Device Guard, Windows Hello, Fingerprint Biometric security, Credential Guard, Bitlocker, Enterprise Data Protection and more.

Some of the first OEM systems that will be using AMD's 7th generation Pro APUs will be HP's Elitedesk 705 G3 system, coming in mini, SFF and mini-tower form-factors and aimed at different applications.

There is a big market for commercial systems and AMD obviously wants a big part of it with its new AMD 7th generation Bristol Ridge Pro APUs, offering some features that Intel just can't keep up with.
