The general impression the Maximus V Formula from ASUS leaves makes us want more. Once again we like the ROG design, which meanwhile belongs to the evergreens in the industry. Furthermore there are three PCI Express 3.0 slots which make this board future proof. Another decent feature is the Supreme FX audio solution, which you can find on this board. Looking at it from a technical point of views, it's definitely an improvement over a standard onboard audio chip. | -

Layout | + | - | |
Basically the ASUS Maximus V Formula's Layout has been very well thought. Once more practical are the angled SATA connectors as well as the power- and reset-buttons. There is also a debug display which is very useful in case you should have issues with a component in your system or the board itself. Even the placement of the PCI-Express x16 is very well chosen. There is a total of three of these slots. We think this is a good number of PCI Express x16 slots for a gaming motherboard altough most gamers will never use three graphics cards for their rig. But still it leaves you with plenty of options if you want to plug in other expansion cards. Overclockers will also like the voltage readouts but basically this board is more suitable for enthusiast gamers than extreme overclockers. |

Performance | + | - | |
With the Maximus V Formula, ASUS has a motherboard in its portfolio, which is a step behind what the competition is capable of. Only in 3DMark Vantages CPU test we saw a good score in all the other benchmarks you find this board in the center span of our tables or even at the bottom. Therefore it's no wonder that the overall rakings with a last spot in 3D performance and a second to last spot in 2D performance are very bad. Fortunately this board isn't power hungry. Thanks to decent power consumption the Maximus V Formula ranks third when it comes to our performance per watt ratio. - 3DMark Vantage CPU | - 3DMark Vantage Total - PCMark 07 - Games |

BIOS / Overclocking | + | - | |
These days ASUS is also a byword for exceptionally good BIOS'es. It has everything it needs to have and even more. There is a very nice design, an easy to understand structure and setting for everything you might want to adjust or change. Even overclockers find a lot of new settings to play with. There are for example all the memory presets, which are great if you want to achieve good results quickly. In the end it has been childrens play to reach the clock wall of our test CPU. | - Well structured BIOS
- UEFI-BIOS - Overclocking - Too many options/settings, we love that! |

If you want to build an absolute high end comptuer or an overclocking rig, which is based on Intels Ivy Bridge CPU then the Maximus V Extreme is one of the very best choices for this purpose. | - High-End - Gaming - Overclocking |
