Mid-range and high-end 6-inch phablets
During its Nokia World annual conference held at Abu Dhabi, Nokia has unveiled two new 6-inch phablet members of the Lumia lineup, the mid-range Lumia 1320 and the high-end Lumia 1520. Both based around a 6-inch screen in 720p or 1080p flavor, the new Lumia's will use Qualcomm's Snapdragon 400 and 800 chipsets and should definitely put some pressure on other phablets on the market.
The Lumia 1320 is a mid-range phablet aiming to go against Sasmung's own Galaxy Mega lineup, mostly due to its US $339 ex. VAT price tag. As noted earlier, the Lumia 1320 is built around a 6-inch 1280x720, 245ppi, IPS ClearBlack screen, protected by Gorilla Glass 3 and has 164.25 x 85.9 x 9.79 mm dimensions and 220g weight. In order to keep it inside the "mid-range" price range, Nokia had to cut some corners, so unlike the high-end 6-inch Lumia 1520 device, this one had to settle with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 400 chipset with dual-core Krait 300 CPU part clocked at 1.7GHz and Adreno 305 GPU.
The rest of the features include 1GB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage expandable via microSD card slot, impressive connectivity with 4G LTE, HSPA+, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11bgn WiFi as well as 3400mAh battery with support for Qi-compatible wireless charging. The camera part was also cut down so Lumia 1320 have to stick with 5-megapixel rear camera with single flash, image stabilization and PureView technology as well as the 0.3-megapixel front one. It will run on Windows Phone 8GDR3 OS.
The Lumia 1520 on the other hand is quite an interesting high-end device built around a 6-inch 1920x1080, 368ppi, ClearBlack IPS screen and will actually be the first Windows Phone OS device that will be powered by Qualcomm's top-offer Snapdragon 800 quad-core chipset. The Snapdragon 800 is paired up wtih 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage which is also expandable via microSD card slot.
Design-wise both the Lumia 1320 and the Lumia 1520 look a lot like the earlier released Lumia 1020, sans the obvious lack of the camera hump in the back and the actual size. The precise dimensions of the Lumia 1520 are set at 162.8 x 85.4 x 8.7 mm and it weighs 209g. The body is made from poly-carbonate that is actually recycled so it also gets a plus for being a bit more eco-friendly.
Since the Lumia 1520 is aiming at high-end market with its US $749 ex. VAT price tag, Nokia definitely had to do something special with the camera department and equipped the Lumia 1520 with 20.7-megapixel PureView rear camera with 6-lens Carl Zeiss optics, optical image stabilization and dual LED flash. It also comes with 1.2-megapixel front camera while the rest of the specs include LTE, HSDPA, HSUPA, NFC, 802.11a/b/g/n/ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 and USB 2.0 for connectivity, 3400mAh battery with Qi-compatible wireless charging and, of course, Windows 8 OS with Lumia Black software pack.
Both new Lumia's from Nokia look quite interesting and could put a lot of pressure on the competition in the phablet market. Of course we'll have to wait for them to actually show up on retail/e-tail shelves and see some reviews.
