While most titles that were originally meant for consoles simply get ported to PC without any optimizations, Ubisoft's Luc Poirier, team leader for the rendering team on Assassins Creed 4 at Ubisoft Montreal, has noted that Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag might just be a bit different.
According to Luc Poirire, Ubisoft has done some major optimizations to the engine and thus making the game much better on the PC and should scale much better on more than three CPU cores. Of course since the optimization is done at engine level, this was not done in order to bring better experience to PC but rather on every platform, which is most likely a result of the fact that Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will also come to next-gen consoles as well.
Luc Poirier noted that “there was a major optimization pass that was done on the engine, not just for the PC, but for every platform. The scheduler used for the rendering was rewritten from the ground up. In Assassins Creed 4, the engine will use all the cores it needs until it sees that using more cores brings no more gain. So, yes we should expect better performance on PC than Assassins Creed 3, especially on DX11 hardware.”
According to DSO Gaming that had a chance to sit down with Luc Poirire, there was also some talks regarding the AnvilNext engine that might bring support for DirectX 11.2 and AMD's own Mantle API, so we are definitely looking forward to the full interview.
