Apple announces budget-friendly US $99 iPhone 5C

The iPhone 5 in a polycarbonate shell

Apple has finally crumbled upon a pressure from cheaper smartphones and has now officially released its new budget-friendly 4-inch iPhone 5C, which is practically an iPhone 5 in a different and plastic case.

Based upon 4-inch 1136x640 Retina screen that is identical to the iPhone as well as a hard-coated polycarbonate unibody shell that will allow Apple to launch the iPhone 5C in a wide variety of "happy" colors and "old" Apple A6-class SoC that was also ticking inside the iPhone 5, the new iPhone 5C will also feature the same cameras and be available in 16 and 32GB versions.

The new iPhone 5C is also a bit bulkier than the iPhone 5 as it is thicker at 9mm and even heavier at 132g. This bulkier size allowed Apple to squeeze in a heftier battery so the new iPhone 5C will, at least, have a longer battery life. As noted, it has the same 8-megapixel rear camera, front one with Face Time HD for video calls and packs 100Mbps LTE, Bluetooth 4.0 and dual-band 802.11abgn WiFi for connectivity.

Apple will also offer, for US $30 of course, a silicone-based protective case/bumper in a wide variety of colors thus allowing multiple color combinations for the new iPhone 5C.

The new iPhone 5C will be available on September 20th, alongside the iPhone 5S, with a price tag of US $99 and US $199 for 16 and 32GB versions with a two-year contract, of course.
