Phenom IV X12 with 6 GHz

Too nice to be true?

Once more it is Chiphell that publishes an interesting roumor, which, for obvious reasons, should be taken with a grain of salt. It is known, that AMD is working on their 28 naomeer Kaveri APU, which are based on Steamroller architecture and have been postponed to 2014. Meanwhile it looks like there will also be a new high-end CPU that is going to launch alongside Kaveri.

It is quite a surprise to read about an AMD Phenom IV X12 170, which is supposed to be a 12 core CPU, that clocks with an astonishing 6 GHz. This CPU seems to be under the development of AMD with the codename Baeca and this monster should feature a 25 nanometer process. So far AMD has never mentioned, that there will be CPU's with 25 nanometer structures in the 2013 to 2014 time frame. So far the company has only been talking about Kaveri APU's featuring 28 nanometer process technology. What almost unbelievable is, that this CPU should offer 6 GHz clocks and 12 cores at a TDP of just 75 Watts and furthermore there should be a 24 Megabyte Cache. Judging by the specs this is somewhere inbetween incredible to unbelievable.

From a CPU-Z screenshot Chiphell is able to tell, that the upcoming Phenom IV X12 170 will also support 3DNow(+), AMD-V and AMD-IV. On the CPU-Z screen one can see, that this CPU must be in the engineering phase and it's being internally tested on an AM4 motherboard from ASUS. The AM4 socket will feature 1356 Pins and therefore it won't be downwards compatible. If you're, like us, interested in a possible launch date, even that is being mentioned on Chiphell. Over there the leaker is talking about mid 2014, after 28 nanometer Kaveri APU's have been launched.

Personally I think this is sounds too nice to be true, especially the part with the TDP is more unbelievable and incredible. But still, 75 Watt with 12 cores at 6 GHz, would be quite something and combined with an architecture that offers higher IPC than Vishera, this could make Intel break a sweat in the enthusiast market.
