About a month ago, AMD has triumphantly announced on its Twitter account that it will release a new driver that will fix micro-stuttering frame pacing issues. This has been a thorn in AMD's eye for quite some time, especially considering that Nvidia was much better in that field, thus the new Catalyst 13.8 beta was born.


The new AMD Catalyst 13.8 beta driver also brings a new AMD Catalyst Control Center that features frame pacing option in the AMD CrossfireX setting under the gaming tab. According to AMD and release notes, the setting is support under DirectX 10 and DirectX 11, resolutions up to 2560x1600 and "ensures that frames rendered across multiple GPUs in a CrossFire configuration will be displayed at an even and regular pace".

The good side of the story is that there will not be specific Catalyst profiles and this should work on all games and, according to AMD, future releases of drivers will include support for DirectX 9, as well as 4K screens and Eyefinity setups with higher resolution.

According to a few benchmarks done by various sites, the new beta driver is certainly better than what we have seen so far and the frame rates are much smoother. According to Anandtech, the most impressive result can be seen in the Battlefield 3 game. Of course, there is still much room for improvement but everyone agree that it is definitely a step in the right direction.
