Microsoft wants 1080p Windows Phone smartphones

Bringing support later this year

Microsoft is planning to update its Windows Phone plaform with support for 1080p screens later this year according to a post at The Verge.

Although no precise devices were mentioned, Microsoft's Windows Phone platform currently simpy can't be any competition to a fleet of Full HD Android smartphones. Currently, Windows Phone platform supports WVGA, WXGA and 720p resolutions but the upcoming update to the platform might change the tide.

According to details, the new update will not be a part of the rumored Windows Blue update but should come earlier as a separate update. Microsoft plans to release it before Christmas and also bring support for the new Qualcomm processors, bringing quad-core option for Windows Phone as well. As you might remember, HTC planned to release a 4.7-inch Zenith flagship Windows Phone device but scrapped it with an explanation that it could not match high-end Android smartphones due to its lower resolution screen.

The Windows Phone platform sounds and looks pretty good but it just can't compete with Android flagship smartphones, at least not yet.
