Valve made a big impact at Consumer Electronics Shows 2014 in Las Vegas by announcing no less than 13 partners which will launch their own version of the Steam Machines and today we finally have integrated driver support for both AMD and Intel GPUs for SteamOS.
As you already know, Valve's SteamOS has been out for quite a while but was unfortunately, limited to Nvidia graphics. With the latest SteamOS update, Valve has updated AMD Catalyst driver to preview release 13.11 Beta 9.9 as well as fixed crashes on Intel graphics. With the new update all Radeon HD 5000-series GPUs and later products are supports but SteamOS still lacks support for Nvidia Optimus switching technologies.
According to Valve, the new update should install automatically. It is really good to see that Valve is pushing hard with support for SteamOS and it is definitely shaping up to be the next big thing when it comes to gaming. Valve also noted that there are some "open issues" left with AMD graphics driver but at least there is an option now.
