We already knew that the upcoming GTX 770 will be pretty much the "updated" GTX 680 and that most partners will simply use the existing GTX 680 PCBs, we also assumed that Nvidia will be going for a different chip that could feature GPU Boost 2.0 and better performance per Watt. Unfortunately, it appears that the GTX 770 is nothing but a GTX 680 with higher clocks as Reddit user posted a BIOS ROM image that allows almost any GTX 680 to be turned into a Geforce GTX 770
We asked around and some partners confirmed that they will be simply using the same PCB with a new BIOS so the BIOS flashing story makes sense. The Reddit user posted the BIOS ROM image as well as a few GPU-Z screenshots showing a Geforce GTX 770 that he got by simply flashing its own GTX 680. The BIOS sets the graphics card to work at 1059MHz base and 1125MHz Boost GPU clocks while memory works at 1752MHz (7.0GHz effective).
Techpowerup tested the BIOS and found out that it is nothing more than a modified GTX 680 BIOS with increased clocks with a modified driver INF that changes the name of the graphics card into Geforce GTX 770. Of course, bear in mind that it might not work on every GTX 680 and be unstable on most of them, it pretty much depends from sample to sample.
According to Techpowerup, the new BIOS gives around 5 to 7 percent performance improvement and it appears that GTX 770 will be exactly that, the GTX 680 with a new name, higher clocks and a new BIOS.
