Micron has started volume production of next-generation GDDR6 memory. The company specifically says it has started mass production of 8Gb memory chips (1GB). According to latest rumors, the initial GDDR6 memory will come with speeds ranging from 10 to 14 Gbps with 1.25 or 1.35 voltage.


The GDDR6 chip has been designed entirely from Micron. The upcoming chip should offer substantial performance improvement over even the current GDDR5. At first Micron will release its 8Gb GDDR6 memory chip in 12Gbps and 14Gbps flavors for graphics cards. Then, in the near future, the company will add 16Gbps GDDR6 chips as well. In terms of density, the upcoming chips will offer a maximum capacity of 32Gb.

However SK Hynix and Samsung have already announced mass production of GDDR6 memory chips as well. Since NVIDIA will talk about a new generation of graphics cards later in August, we expect to see first GDDR6 chips around that time.
