Since we’re getting closer to the launch of the Intel’s Coffee Lake processors more and more leaks are making it through. Meanwhile expreview.com has jumped the gun testing an upcoming Intel Core i7-8700K processor on an Intel Z370 series motherboard with 4 x 8GB of DDR4-2400 memory in place.


The first batch of benchmarks shows the difference at default clocks between the Core i7-8700K and the Core-i7-7700K in single- and multi-threaded applications. These new tests confirm what we've already seen with all the other leaks. The Core i7-8700K is on average 2% faster in single-threaded and up to 42% faster in multi-threaded applications compared to the Core i7-7700K. Since the boost clock on the new i7-8700K is 4% higher than with the i7-7700K Skylake and there are more cores/threads such a result was/is to be expected.

In a second step the guys over at expreview.com set the speed of both CPUs to 4.5GHz. The results gathered in several CPU benchmarks appear to be quite similar. The Core i7-8700K is 1% faster in single-threaded and 40% faster in multi-threaded applications. The comparison includes the Core i7-7800X which sports similar single-threaded performance but higher multi-threaded scores.

In addition they did also ran a few 3D tests in using 3DMark, The Division and Hitman. The test setup is based on an EVGA GTX 1080 Ti graphics card and shows a tiny difference between the three systems. Only in 3DMark, checking the physics routine, there is an advantage of 42% for the i7-8700K.

So far it looks like Coffee Lake will be a good alternative to Skylake-X, since the performance of the two six-cores CPUs is almost the same, yet the price of the mainstream platform is going to be notably less.
