According to a report from DigiTimes, Gigabyte is planning to merge their graphics card and motherboard divisions into a single unit. Starting August 1st, the new department will be led by Eddie Lin, sales and marketing associate vice president of Gigabyte's Gaming Product Business Unit. The executives of each individual division will be reshuffled under Lin's leadership.
While Gigabyte's sales have been stable through 2015 and 2016, total shipments have dropped dramatically in the first half of this year. It's claimed that this drop in sales is due to weaker demand in China's PC and Internet Cafe markets. Net profits are also listed as being down 50.59% since last year. During the first quarter of this year around 3.5 million motherboards and 900'000 GPUs have been sold by Gigabyte. In 2015 Gigabyte has sold 17.1 million units and in 2016 16.2 million, which means that the quarterly numbers were higher during the past years. Although the cryptocurrency miners have helped shore up the company's graphics division this quarter, Gigabyte has to be cautious on the next moves. Furthermore the cryptocurrency demand is only temporary.
This change should finally allow Gigabyte to approach the markets in a more unified way. Some market researchers believe that alongside the business reorganization, Gigabyte is going to face layoffs and resignations after October. For the last quarter this year it’s expected that Gigabyte will have a stable team again.
