Intel Core i7 8th gen 15% quicker than 7th Gen

Finally some competition from AMD?

Yesterday Intel held their annual investors day, presenting new details on the upcoming Cannonlake architecture. The chip giant is promising a 15% increase in performance over the previous Kaby Lake architecture.

As you might already be aware Cannonlake is going to be Intel’s next CPU architecture. Currently these chips are expected to be launch in the second half of 2017. Since Cannonlake is going to replace Kaby Lake they will occupy the mainstream segment as well.

If Intel is really going to be able to come up with a 15% performance increase compared to Kaby Lake this would mean that we would finally see a decent advanced generation over generation. When we compared Kaby Lake to Skylake in our review was we noticed that there was only a 7% performance increase on average in favor of Kaby Lake. Nevertheless looking at the slides Intel presented during their annual investors day they mentioned that already between the 6th and the 7th generation of Intel core i7 processors there should have been a 15% increase in performance.

In the end we’re really hoping that the eighth generation of Intel core I7 processors will be more than just an Overclocked a seventh generation. In other words we’re hoping that Intel really starts to feel some pressure from AMD’s Ryzen processors. Apparently for us as customers it would be a great thing if Intel started to optimize the architecture of their current processors in favor of better performance and not just bump the clock frequencies. It’s been way too long that Intel felt any proper competition from AMD. Luckily it looks like this is changing these days.
