AMD has announced that their Ryzen CPUs will arrive by the beginning of March. Since the NDA will expire end of February, the new announcement from Lisa Su makes perfect sense. There is a massive hype around AMD’s Zen architecture lately and judging by the amount of leaks and rumors the entire tech industry is eagerly waiting for these new chips to be launched.
With Ryzen AMD could finally be able to compete against Intel again after more than a decade. According to Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, Ryzen will compete with Intel’s Core i7 and Core i5 range. However although there are finally details on the release date of AMD Ryzen, we still don't know which model will be available at launch. According to the latest rumors we could expect only an eight core model by the beginning of March and a six as well as a quad core chip at a later stage.
Furthermore there still aren't many details on the motherboards. Although the features of the different AMD chipset have been shared numerous times the motherboard vendors are less specific on their lineups. A few days ago ASUS, Gigabyte and MSI have unveiled new details on their upcoming socket AM4 motherboards that are based on AMD’s 300 series chipset but so far they’ve only been talking about ATX form factor models. Since during the past months several manufacturers have introduced more small form factor cases and PSUs, we’d also expect to see mini-ITX motherboards for AMD’s Ryzen chips.
It’s always been a pity that there never was a miniITX motherboard with a socket AM3+ and 990FX chipset, which is why we’re really hoping that this is going to change with the new socket.
