As fast as a Core i7-6900K
Yesterday, during their "New Horizon" event, which AMD hosted in its home town Texas, AMD, for the first time, has shown a RYZEN CPU. AMD worked on Zen, which now goes by the name RYZEN, for almost 4 years and the main focus of the company has been creating a chip that features competitive IPC performance. According to the company, it looks like that Zen either met or exceeded the goals set by the company, so we’re pretty curious to find out more.
Apparently AMD has shared some new information during their New Horizon event on Ryzen. For instance that the new CPUs will definitely make it to market somewhen in the beginning of 2017. Apart from that, as announced, they’ve finally presented a first Ryzen based system, while the CPU featured 8 cores, 16-threads, 4MB of L2 cache and 16MB of L3 cache. The clock speed were set to 3.4GHz, which we’ve already mentioned in yesterday’s news on Ryzen.
During the show the CPU has been used on some heavy benchmark like Blender and Handbrake. In Handbrake the Ryzen CPU has been compared to an Intel system with Core i7-6900K CPU, and it turned out that the AMD system was a tiny bit faster. Nevertheless it needs to be mentioned that the Intel System wasn’t making use of quad channel memory. Apart from showing performance level AMD was also very keen on presenting that the CPUs are energy efficient. Therefore, under load, the Ryzen system pulled 188 watts from the wall, while the Intel setup with Core i7-6900K needed 191 watts.
Yesterday we’ve also been mentioning XFR, which is the abbreviation for Extended Frequency Range. It appears that the upcoming Ryzen CPUs are capable of automatically determining what kind of cooling is being used and then increase overclocking headroom. In other words this means, if you’re using water cooling, which is capable of keeping the temperatures of the CPU lower, the internal sensors detect that and increase the boost frequency headroom.
On another note it can be kept in mind, that the Ryzen CPU with 8 cores and 16 threads that has been shown during the New Horizon event is supposed to hit the market with a 300 US-Dollar price tag. Should the AMD CPU really be as fast as an Intel Core i7-6900K, then we would be at a point where a 300 US-Dollar AMD chip performs equally good as an 1100 US-Dollar Intel processor. This, in the end, would definitely be amazing news for everybody.
