Well-known overclocker Roman "der8auer" Hartung has found a way to unlock TMUs and Stream Processors on AMD Radeon RX 460 graphics card. The unlocking process involves nothing more than a simple firmware update but it might not work on all RX 460 graphics cards and worst case the unlocking process could brick your card. In other words if you do a firmware update, it’s all at your own risk.

A quick recap on the specifications shows that the AMD Radeon RX 460 is a mid-range graphics card based on the Polaris 11 GPU architecture with 56 TMUs and 896 Stream Processors. Once is unlocked there is an additional 8 TMUs and 128 Stream Processors at your disposal.


So far the flash has only been tested on an ASUS Strix O4G and on a Sapphire Nitro 4G graphics card. At the moment the guys behind overclocking.guide are testing more partner cards and soon they are about to post modified BIOS. The flashing process is quite simple. First you do a backup of your BIOS with GPU-Z, after that you can flash the new BIOS within less than 15 seconds.


Judging by the benchmark results gathered with an Intel Core i7-6950X and 4 x 8GB DDR4 memory on an ASUS Rampage V Edition 10 motherboard there seems to be a 12% performance gain. To be a bit more precise, the gain in 3DMark Firestrike GT1 was 9% and running The Witcher 3 performance was 12% higher than with the unlocked card.
